What is “Windfallen” wood?
As the name implies, Windfallen wood comes from trees toppled by a storm. It means that no forest was clear-cut in harvesting the wood. It also means that the log probably spent a little time on the ground, leaving signs of fungal interaction called spalling as well as holes from insects. Once air-dried, the wood is sterilized by bringing it up to over 140 F for about an hour, so any insects attempting to make a home in the wood are unable to persist. Technically, the majority of the wood I use is windfallen, but I sort the wood based on whether it shows signs of non-wooden life or not.
